Forever Designer Interview: DesignerDigitals

Welcome to the seventh Forever Designer Interview! Each month we sit down with a different designer, and ask them what it’s like to be a digital artist. To start the new year, we’re speaking with DesignerDigitals' Katie Pertiet.

1. How did you get started as a designer, and for how long have you been doing this?

I studied graphic design in college, and that’s what my degree is in. I worked for many years in the design/advertising world before starting my own design business. I’d always been a scrapbooker, and I evolved into Digital scrapbooking my own memories in 2003/2004. At that point, designing for scrapbooking was a natural progression and I started designing digital downloads in 2005. In 2005 I also started licensing my artwork to various paper manufacturers and in 2006 I began licensing to home decor manufacturers as well and that is something I am really working on growing.

2. Do you draw inspiration from specific artists or designers? If so, who?

I prefer to draw inspiration from the world around us. I love vintage magazines and advertisements and of course vintage botanical books. I also enjoy reading magazines and seeing ads in them that inspire me. TV and TV commercials inspire me as well as the wealth of inspiration available online. Everywhere I look I see new ideas!

3. What is your personal design philosophy?

I don’t know that I really have a design philosophy per se. I create what I enjoy and many times let my ‘mojo’ lead the way! I do believe it is best not to overthink things. There are hundreds of ways to approach a project and you need to just pick one and go with it. You can always go back and create something completely new again with new ideas on the same topic! The same is true when scrapbooking. Don’t overthink it, just do it. Be sure to include the date and some story and then mission accomplished no matter what the page looks like. It’s all about documenting the memory and I think we tend to lose sight of that sometimes.

4. Do you have a personal favorite art kit or series of art kits that you’ve created? (If you do, could please include a high resolution preview of the art?)

Thats a hard one! I love so many of my products! I guess if I have to choose just one I’d choose Spring Fields!

5. Do you have any advice for someone out there who may want to be a designer themselves?

Know your craft and know yourself. You must be true to yourself and follow your own unique passion to be successful.

6. What do you like to do for fun, or in your spare time?

I enjoy spending time with my husband, working on DIY projects around the house and I really enjoy photography too so I’m always up for an adventure where the big camera is involved!
